This past weekend has been a blast attending a SEC football game at Auburn AL. Our group of nine made a full day out of it by getting to the stadium 6 hours before kick-off and taking in all the pageantry and campus atmosphere that is college football in the south. We still had time for eating some great tailgate grub and drinking beer. I got to sample a number of fantastic brews but the one I will feature today is “world class” and from Russian River Brewery-Pliny the Elder. This California Beer is brewed in Santa Rosa which is in Sonoma County.
Pliny the Elder gets it name according to Russian River from Pliny, the man, who lived in the first century- 23 to 79 A.D. According to their brewing references, he and is contemporaries either created the botanical name or at least wrote about Lupus Salictarius, or hops, currently known as Humulus Lupulus. That was a very early reference to an important part of any Double IPA! Pliny the beer has now become one of Russian River flagship brews!
I was treated to this brew by Joanna Read and her husband Carey. They actually have a “a guy in California who gets them god stuff”. I rate this beer as one of the five best beers I have had this year. I loved the fact the Russian River beers are fresh. Pliny that we drank in Alabama was brewed in California just two weeks ago. Thanks Joanna!
