December 19-Loose Cannon

Loose Cannonloose-cannon

Got to sample a Maryland IPA from High Seas Brewing on a shopping trip to Fayetteville NC. I had this beer at The Tap House which is located on Hay Street right next to Huske Hardware.

High Seas Brewing is located in Baltimore and I have had one of their beers back in July called Powder Monkey which was very good. In fact Powder Monkey won a bronze medal at 2008 World Beer Cup. My beer today is named Loose Cannon which is High Seas flagship beer. Loose Cannon an IPA with a 7.3% ABV and IBU rating of 45. This is an EXCELLENT beer if you like IPA’s give it a try.

I wanted to research the phrase “Loose Cannon”. I offer up the following as an explanation to its origin.

In the 1600’s to 1800’s, wooden warships carried cannon as their primary offensive weapons. In order to avoid damage from their enormous recoil when fired they were mounted on rollers and secured with rope. A loose cannon was just what it sounds like, that is, a cannon that had become free of its restraints and was rolling dangerously about the deck. This concept was described in a 1874 Victor Hugo novel called Ninety Three.
