Very rainy and warm Christmas Eve in the Carolinas. Temperatures in the high 60’s and 3 plus inches of rain since last night. It is feeling anything but winter but I am sampling another new beer from another variety 12 pack this one from Saranac. The name of the box is 12 Beers of Winter. It includes 4059 Porter, Legacy IPA, Pale Ale, Into the Dark, Chai Brown Ale, and Long John Lager
I choose Long John Lager as my beer of the day. This New York brew is dunkel lager that contains 5.5% ABV and has IBU rating of 25. Simply put Dunkel refers to dark in German but there are many varieties of german beer that are dark including Marzan, Schwarzbier, and Bock. A North Carolina dunkel I had this year called Dark Cloud by Mother Earth Brewing out of Kinston, NC is a pretty good dunkel.
The New York Times did a really nice article on Dunkel Lagers if you want to know more. I would rate Long John Lager as a fair selection.
