A friend of friends-Jeff Cushing and Robeson Road Runners-January 8

One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for January 8, 2015. I have had the privilage over the last 14 years to be associated with a group in Lumberton, NC called the Robeson Road Runners. The Robeson Road Runners is a group that is driven by a mision statement that reads as folows: “The Robeson Road Runners is a group of runners, walkers, cyclists, triathletes and individuals concerned about the betterment of our community. We are located in Robeson County, North Carolina and we work to bring awareness to the idea that fitness can be fun and should be enjoyed by the entire family.” Yesterday the Robeson Road Runner lost a friend in a tragic bicycle accident. His name was Jeff Cushing and he died while going for a ride late in the afternoon. Jeff was a driving force in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s in our community to bring running to the forefront. Thanks to the support of a local businessman named Bob Caton, Jeff Cushing and others created the Natural Light 10K which became a premier road race in the State of North Carolina. The race was a fixture in the community until the mid 1990’s when it just went away. The Robeson Road Runners evolved in the summer of 1999 when a new resident to Lumberton Maria Parker started inquiring about the race. When she was told there was no one promoting it her willpower and persistence created the Robeson Road Runners. She and the earlier leaders got some great advice from Jeff on how to conduct a road race. Jeff’s advice helped RRR create the “Rumba on the Lumber”. http://www.robesonroadrunners.com The Friends-ROBESON ROAD RUNNERS-depicted below are current and some past presidents of RRR. image The Friend of the Friends-JEFF CUSHING image Robeson Road Runner thoughts about their friend Jeff Cushing Jeff was a national championship collegiate runner that loved to compete. He transferred his love for running to cycling over the last 5 years. Link to story on Jeff’s tragic accident is below. http://robesonian.com/news/breaking_news-news/50992544/Ex-track-star-at-UNCP-killed-in-traffic-accident Lee Ann Musselwhite – My heart is so heavy. I considered him a friend. His wife, Cindy, and their family are in my thoughts and prayers. His death, this accident, is really hard to absorb. Jeff Neelon – This is horrible. Jeff got me interested in running back in 1976 and then formed the Robeson Road Runners and worked together on the Natural Light Run for many years. He was the reason we have a strong running community today. Over the years we ran many races together. When I talked with him a couple of weeks ago life was good. Good marriage to Cindy, business was doing real good and he had plans for the future. EA and I have Cindy and his children in our prayers. Marion Thompson – Horrible news we lost a great champion for running and fitness. Praying for his family. Frank Dickerson-Jeff got me started running when I was in high school big loss for all of us. Eric Dent-My heart is broken. Jeff was such a nice guy and a great member of our community. Kelly Haskins-So sad to hear of this loss for our community. Praying for family. From all th RRR members past and present thanks to Jeff Cushing for being an example to our community about what a lifelong commitment to fitness looks like.
