A friend of a friend-Stephanie Chavis and Joe Osman-February 4

One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for February 4, 2015.

My goal in 2015 is to learn or get acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.

Last night one of our best friends Joe Osman invited us to come out to a local restaurant in Lumberton, NC called Arnold’s to help him raise some money. Joe will be participating in Robeson County United Way Dancing with the Stars event on February 19-21, 2015. Each couple in the competition raises money thru votes which cost $10 each and through various individualized fundraisers. Joe and his partner were in the restaurant last night trying to help a great cause with their unique fundraiser.

Arnold’s Restaurant and their owner Arnold West agreed to donate a portion of the proceeds from their receipts on February 3rd so a bunch of Joe’s friends came out to support him. That group of friends included my wife Mira, Don and Maureen Metzger, Ron Roach and his daughters, Joe and Beth Terranova, Carey and Joanna Read, David and Janice McGuirt, Brenda Crebs, Christine James, Bruce Bullock, and Julie Fowlkes. We all had a great Tuesday evening.

Joe is a graduate of UNC Pembroke and former collegiate soccer player. He currently serves as Assistant District Attorney for Robeson County. His wife Janna was also at the restaurant last night and they are a great couple with two fabulous sons. Janna Osman has a reputation for being a fabulous “Catch Phrase” player with a soft spot for giraffes but that is a story for another day.

Dancing with the Stars in our county has proved to be a widely popular event and fundraiser. The concept is that leaders in the community are randomly paired together and assigned a choreographer to work on a two-minute dance routine. Each couple works on raising money will all the proceeds benefiting United Way.

Our family got even more connected to Joe Osman when we found out our daughter Becca would be Joe and his partner’s choreographer. Our daughter has her Master’s Degree in Exercise Science and is a former college instructor and collegiate dance/spirit team coach at UNC Pembroke. She is really having fun coaching in this event. Below is a picture of Becca with her youngest brother Mack.

What was great about this fundraiser for me was I got to meet Joe’s partner for Dancing with the Stars Stephanie Chavis. Stephanie is a leader in our community and serves Robeson County’s Director of Emergency Management & Fire Marshal.

What I learned about Stephanie Chavis at Dancing with the Stars Fundraiser

First thing is that Stephanie and Joe have gone from acquaintances to friends because of a common cause to try to better our community. Stephanie is very much a family oriented person who takes great pride in not only her family but her community. What was great about Tuesday night was I got to meet Stephanie’s mom, her aunts, her two daughters, and three grandchildren. When Stephanie Chavis dances in a couple of weeks she will have four generations of her family in the audience. She loves her family and her family loves her that was evident from our first meeting. Stephanie struck me as laid back and I am sure knowing Joe and my daughter Becca that is a good thing.

Stephanie is a great example of professional perseverance as she has elevated herself during her 27 year career with the Robeson County Emergency Management Department. She began in 1988 in that department after finishing her degree at UNC Pembroke in 1987. She went from being an Administrative Assistant to being a Director thru hard work and mastering the leadership skills necessary to be successful.

Joe and Stephanie both are keeping their dance music and dance moves a secret until the night of the show. If you want to help both “A Friend and a friend of a friend” considering voting and helping United Way of Robeson County.
