One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for May 7, 2015.
My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.
Fairmont, NC is a small town in the southern part of the county I live in. It has a population of about 2,600 people and I am always amazed at how many great people I know that call Fairmont home. Fairmont was considered one of the major tobacco markets in the world at one time. In 1951 Fairmont sold twice as much tobacco as was grown in Robeson County. As health concerns have affected the sales of tobacco, many local farmers have turned to other cash crops, mainly corn, soybeans and wheat.
On Saturday May 2nd my wife and about 250 other guests went to Fairmont to attend a party to honor the son of some great friends of ours. The event was held at a marvelous home on 140 plus acres of land called Ferncroft Estates.

One of my favorite people from Fairmont is Janna Osman. Janna grew up in Fairmont, NC and attended college at UNC Pembroke. While she was there she met a man on the UNCP Soccer team named Joe Osman and they got married. Joe today is the Assistant District Attorney for Robeson County and Janna works at Coastal Speech Solutions. They have two very handsome and polite sons named Will and Drew.
Joe and Janna are great parents and support their son’s school, athletic, church, and scouting activities. Joe is very involved in our community and this winter he helped raise money for United Way by participating in “Dancing with the Stars”.
There are lots of wonderful qualities about Janna and that is why so many people gravitate to her. She is a talented singer and very involved with her church First Presbyterian in Lumberton, NC. Janna is a person who always has a smile on her face and is quick to great you with a hug. Janna is funny, caring, selfless, thoughtful, and even though she might not admit it a tad gullible.
Growing up in Fairmont, NC she lived somewhat of a sheltered life. This naiveté has often led her to be victimized by practical jokes or to be shocked when she hears some bizarre story from the news or even within our circle of friends. These stories always generate two reactions in Janna she gets this bewildered look on her face and very slowly and distinctly says “Oh My God”. If she has had more than one margarita which is not often the pronunciation is more drawn out and quite southern. Once Janna gets laughing there is not much you can do to stop it except to let it run its course. She is just one wonderful person to be around and I consider it a blessing to have her and Joe as friends.
The Kenney’s and Osman’s along with other friends have enjoyed some great times together and I look forward to many more. Whether it’s traveling to the beach, Charleston, or just sitting on a porch we always have a good time.
Janna personality is not negative and she is the type of person you want as a friend.
On Saturday May 2nd most guests at the party being held at Ferncroft Estates were in awe and surprise that a place like that existed right outside of Fairmont. The owners of the Ferncroft Estates are Lionel and Nila Chamberlain. Janna Osman was good friends with the Chamberlain’s daughter and spent a lot of time there during high school.

The English Tudor nestled in Robeson County
Sometime life throws you a surprise and you just have to stop and take it all in. On May 2nd that happened to me. My wife and I had agreed to assist some great friends in hosting a party in Fairmont, NC. My wife had described the location to me but I wasn’t ready for what I encountered after driving 30 minutes south of Lumberton, NC and arriving at the gate off Bethesda Church Road just outside of Fairmont, NC.
We arrived at the home of Lionel and Nila Chamberlain’s home which they call Ferncroft Estate. The place was beautiful and if you blindfolded me and told me I was in the English Countryside as I drove by the front of their house I would have believed it. Ferncroft Estate is just a spectacular event location for a wedding, reception, business retreat, or family gathering. The garden behind the back of the house is a beautiful setting. I took this picture of the garden from the back sunroom of the home.
I encourage you to check out their website.
One of the owners of Ferncroft is Nila Chamberlain who is a professional artist and produces work in watercolor, mixed media, pencil, and pen. Her work has been exhibited and collected throughout the Southern region. Her studio time spans work in both visual art and interior design. Nila worked for many years as the supervisor of the arts for the Public School of Robeson County and she continues to be an avid supporter of the Robeson County Arts Council today.
Nila is a graduate of Glenville State College in West Virginia with a BA in English and art. She was also graduated from Memphis State University, Memphis, Tennessee, with an MA in English and went on to complete graduate certification at Pembroke State University, Pembroke, North Carolina, in administration and supervision. Later in her career, she completed another undergraduate major in Interior Design at Meredith College, Raleigh, North Carolina. Nila is a long-time affiliate member of the American Society of Interior Designers and continues her Interior Design education updates in this organization. At the party you could tell that she loves to host groups.
Nila was very gracious on Saturday giving many of us a tour of her wonderful home. Some of us had to get introduced to Nila as we walked around her house. Janna needed no introductions she just hugged Nila and Lionel and walked on in.
Ferncroft Estate was a great surprise and some times getting surprised has you stealing one of your friends lines “Oh My God”.
