One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for May 28, 2015.
My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.
I am blessed in a lot of different ways. I have a beautiful wife, healthy children, have the privilege to work at a great university, and to add icing to my cake I have great neighbors. One of them is Kenny Biggs and his wife Bonnie. Kenny is just about good as it comes to being a neighbor and friend.

In 1998 our family was moving back to Lumberton, North Carolina for me to start a new career as a college athletic director. I had finished up six years in South Carolina as Winthrop Men’s Basketball Coach and was excited to come back to Lumberton where we had lived from 1985-1992. In August of 1998 we were renting a house on West 9th Street in Lumberton just two doors down from Elm Street. My wife had in her head we would purchase a lot in the Oaks and then build a new house. I was intrigued by a house that was for sale on Elm Street. I kept asking my wife to look at it but she wasn’t thrilled. Two things happened that changed her mind. One; a dear friend of ours Carol Mozingo who lives on Elm Street kept encouraging my wife Mira to look at the house and Two; Kenny Biggs told me to buy it. We have never regretted listening to the advice we got from both of them so we bought the house in September 1998 and moved in Memorial Day Weekend 1999. I won’t bore you with the house rehab but it was worth it.
One of the perks of living in our current house has been the friendship and memories that Kenny Biggs has provided to us. He is a rock solid man, husband, father, and friend. There are so many wonderful things about Kenny that a daily post would not do justice to.
Kenny is hard-working. We both have our vehicles parked in the rear of our homes with our driveways separated by a perforated 7 foot high brick wall. We often have conversations leaving for work and coming home. He leaves the house early and so do I. We have spent time talking about life, weather, and our town thru that brick wall.
Kenny is a dog lover. I am just going to say look at the photo below you will get the idea.
Kenny is a golfer and loves to play any chance he gets. He also has a band of friends named Drew Bullard, David Branch, and Buddy Livingston who have gone on some pretty neat golf outings with Kenny. Even though Kenny is a good golfer he comes back from those trips with more stories than birdies.
Kenny is also a curator to a museum they have in their home. I joke about the inside of their house being a museum because his wife Bonnie Biggs is a great collector. The home has one of the most eclectic collections of art, furniture, photos, and historic artifacts you will find anywhere. Many of those items relate to Kenny’s family rich and long history in Robeson County, NC. I wrote a post about Bonnie back on January 2, 2015. If you want a great laugh read it.
Kenny is a historian and he can tell you lot’s about our county and city’s past. Kenny’s dad was the mayor of Lumberton. The family also has a long-standing business interests in our county that goes back to the 1800’s. Today his daughter Chelsea Biggs Sullivan is part of the family business serving as manager of Biggs Park Mall along with being a licensed real estate agent with Century 21.

Kenny is also friends to a lot of people including Buddy Livingston. Their friendship goes back a long way.

Buddy Livingston and Kenny Biggs went to high school together and graduated in 1972. They have done a lot together over the years. For both of their sakes a lot of those stories have been locked away in their memory vaults.
The two of them have shared beach trips, golf trips, family dinners, birthday celebrations, anniversary celebrations, and a few beers. Buddy today operates Livingston Chiropractic Center in Lumberton, NC
Buddy has a beautiful wife named Marvette and three children Mollie, Tripp, and Lauren.

Buddy is similar to Kenny in that he has given a lot back to the community especially when it comes to recreational sports. He has been a pivotal leader with both recreational baseball and soccer in Lumberton, NC. He was one of the early coaches in the Lumberton youth soccer movement and enjoyed watching all three of his children excel in the sport. He actual had the opportunity to coach our son Kyle and his son Tripp on several travel soccer teams.

Buddy and my wife are also distant cousins and they both have family ties back to Laurel Hill, NC.
When Buddy Livingston and Kenny Biggs get together you know you are witnessing old friends. Lyle Lovett has a great quote about childhood friends that fits those two.
You don’t have to have anything in common with people you’ve known since you were five. With old friends, you’ve got your whole life in common.
