One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for June 19, 2015.
My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.
This weekend some talented and beautiful young woman will vie to be crowned Miss North Carolina in Raleigh, NC. The pageant began on Wednesday June 17 and will conclude on Saturday June 20th with the coronation taking place at 7PM in the Duke Energy for Performing Arts Center in downtown Raleigh. I will be pulling for two ladies that are students at UNC Pembroke. One of those students is a friend, former neighbor, and a current member of our office’s Chancellor Ambassadors Group. Her name is Victoria Huggins and she is the reigning Miss Greater Southeastern.
Victoria is from Lumberton, North Carolina and has enjoyed traveling nationwide as a professional motivational speaker and entertainer since she was seven years old. Victoria has always sought to encourage both the young and the young at heart through positive and uplifting entertainment.
We loved having her as a neighbor a few years ago when she lived on Elm Street in Lumberton, NC.
Victoria’s dad, Terrill, is full-time National Guard with thirty-seven years of service and is stationed in Ft. Bragg, NC. Victoria’s mom and manager, Beverly, is also the office manager of Signature Learning Resources of Lumberton, NC.
Victoria graduated last month from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She walked across the stage on the quad with honors and received a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication with a Double Minor in Religion and Music. She was named “Outstanding Graduate” from her department, and recognized by the National Religion Honors Society through her induction into Theta Alpha Kappa.
Victoria has served in many leadership positions at UNCP, but amongst all of them she always bragged that being in the inaugural group of UNCP Chancellor’s Ambassador was her proudest collegiate accomplishment.
Victoria is grateful to have earned her degrees debt free through the scholarships earned through the Miss America Organization, her community service involvement, and academic excellence.
Whether it is on campus or in the community Victoria Huggins is an active with the youth of Robeson County, as well as seniors and shut-ins. She has been an Ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Association and currently serves as Marketing Chair for the Fayetteville Walk to End Alzheimer’s. She also volunteers for the Children’s Miracle Network, which is the national platform of the Miss America Organization.
Along with Victoria UNC Pembroke will also be represented this week at the Miss North Carolina Pageant with a friend and fellow student named Comfort Johnson who is the reigning Miss Fayetteville.

UNC Pembroke Women at Miss North Carolina Pageant
Comfort Johnson has been very involved with a lot of programs and events on the campus of UNC Pembroke. She is very recognizable at the university for all the things she is involved in not the least of is being a member of the UNC Pembroke Spirit Squad while she was an undergraduate student. Currently she serves as assistant coach for that squad while enrolled in Grad School.
Comfort shown on far left at UNC Pembroke Football Game
Comfort like Victoria lives in Lumberton, NC but Comfort’s hometown is Winston-Salem, NC. She is a graduate student in the sports administration program at the UNC Pembroke. She is very involved in raising awareness about diabetes. Comfort competed as Miss Greater Carolina in last year’s Miss NC pageant, where she made Top 10 and was named Miss Congeniality.
Victoria Huggins also competed in the 2014 Miss NC Pageant. She was honored to be the Third Runner Up last year. In 2014 she received the Overall Talent Award.
Comfort is looking forward to returning as Fayetteville’s representative. Victoria is looking forward to returning as Southeastern North Carolina representative. Fayetteville and UNCP have had a pretty good track record in the event.
According to Beth Knox, executive director of the Miss North Carolina pageant, Fayetteville is tied with Charlotte for five wins each at Miss North Carolina. UNC Pembroke has no less than three graduates win the crown including current UNC Pembroke Board of Trustee Member Lorna Ricotta.
If you want to follow the finals on Saturday night will be televised on Time Warner SportsChannel 323 and online at twcsportschannel.com.
I like the chances that both of these talented ladies have. UNC Pembroke and Braves Nation will be watching the results closely Saturday night.
