A friend of a friend- Keela Fruhling-Mark Vesely-August 6

One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for August 6, 2015.

My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.

Yesterday I got to travel to Augusta, Georgia to do a presentation on leadership to the athletic department at Georgia Regents University (GRU). I was very flattered that my friend Clint Bryant gave me the opportunity. Driving made me reflect on what I was going to share on the way down to Augusta. On the way back I got to reflect on what I actually learned or had refreshed in my mind.

That reflection led me to think about the importance of support people when you have a meeting or special projects. On Tuesday I had to assist the chancellor in doing a presentation and providing campus tours to some special campus visitors.

I got to witness the great job that the support folks at GRU did in planning a 2 day retreat of campus. I started to realize we have folks at UNC Pembroke that do a great job with event planning and logistics.

One of those amazing individuals is Mark Vesely. He serves as the Facility Superintendent for the entire university and does a wonderful job of making sure logistics get done.

Accolades and results like installing the campus’ first two PEV charging stations with solar PV offsetting emissions from use involved Mark. In 2013 we had a very successful visit to campus by UNC Board of Governors that Mark was heavily involved with. Assisting with UNCP signature events like commencement, convocation, alumni drop ins, special speakers, and sometimes accompanying the new chancellor on a road trip are all part of what Mark Vesely does to make UNCP and its leaders shine. Mark also is considered on our campus a go to leader if you want somethng done correctly and with class.

Tomorrow at UNCP another person’s work will shine. Mark is friends with Keela Fruehling who serves as Special Events Director. On Friday Keela will be very involved in a neat event called S.O.S (Support Our Students).

Events and Logistics

Keela Fruehling handles all the special events on the campus of UNC Pembroke and does a great job of it. She has a cool personality that doesn’t let changes fluster her. She can adapt but more importantly does detailed planning that prevents problems from occuring.

Below are some pictures of Keela’s attention to detail.

“The University of North Carolina at Pembroke holds their annual S.O.S. (Support Our Students) Beach Party Fundraiser on Friday, August 7th, 2015.

UNCP has two pros when it comes to event and logistics. I am glad they are on our team and hope they know how much everyone appreciates the quality of their work.
