One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for August 15, 2015.
My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.
On Thursday night a great group of friends decided to get together and go out to eat together. Joe and Beth Terranova put it all together and we had 6 couples go to a new restaurant in Lumberton, NC called Boondocks. The friends attending with us plus many more add great enjoyment to my life. On Thursday I was glad to break bread with the Terranova’s, Massol’s, Roach’s, Read’s, and Metzger’s.
The restaurant Boondocks just recently got reviewed by the local newspaper. Of the six couples attending most of us know one of the owners Trey Winfree. He is an energetic entrepreneur and all twelve of us had a great meal. If you are in the area you should visit.
Our table of twelve at Boondocks was not too far removed from a table of six. Sitting at that table were two people from Pembroke, NC that have done a lot for our community and UNC Pembroke. The two individuals were Dr. Jeff and Sybil Collins. Sybil Collins served two terms on UNCP’s Board of Trustees. Dr. Jeff Collins is one of five siblings to attend UNCP.
Sybil and my wife are proud moms. When I was serving as basketball coach at UNCP in the 1980’s Sybil and my wife Mira spent time watching their small children take swimming lessons each summer at the Jones Center. Sybil and Mira also spent summers together lamenting about being pregnant again.
The Collins family is literally immersed in UNCP history. Sybil is a 1976 graduate, her three children – Jessica ’02, Tyler and Ben ’08 – all attended UNCP and went to UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. All three of Sybil’s children are dentists today in the family practice Collins and Lowery. If that wasn’t enough family you add in Sybil’s brother Ronnie who is a dentist and part of the practice. The start of it all is Sybil’s husband Jeff who is a dentist.
They also have been great supporters of UNCP. A generous gift back in 2008 to name the Hydrotherapy Room at UNCP in their honor occurred while I was serving as Athletic Director.

It just doesn’t get any more family than Collins and Lowery Family & Cosmetic Dentistry.
At dinner Thursday night Sybil came over to talk to our table after we finished our meal and we carried on conversations outside the restaurant. If you know Sybil you know carrying on conversations is not hard for her. She bragged on her grandchildren, she told us about her horses, and how excited she was to have Dr. Robin and Rebecca Cummings back in Pembroke, NC at UNC Pembroke as the chancellor and first lady.
Sybil has lots of friends but her family of five dentists are her closest friends
