One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for August 29, 2015.
My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.
I have a friend in Lumberton that I have missed seeing for the past year. Last fall my friend Dean Davis began serving his country by having to go over seas. He has been missed by a lot of us.

Marion Dean Davis is a 1985 graduate of UNC Pembroke when he got his degree it was called Pembroke State. Today he is a Lt.Colonel in the North Carolina National Guard and that responsibility has taking him over seas the past year. Back in November 2014 he went to New Jersey to do some final training before he made his way to Jordan. This week he got back to USA and arrived at Fort Bliss, TX.
The last few days of 2011 I along with 10 others had a great weekend with Dean and his wife Bobbie Davis bringing in New Year’s at North Myrtle Beach, SC. Photo below is Dean and Bobbie celebrating at midnight.
Over the past year Dean has been with the North Carolina Guard serving in Jordan in the Middle East. Dean is a Lt Colonel and worked as the JOEP LNO in the office of Robert E. Paddock, Jr. Colonel, U.S. Army who serves Senior Defense Official and Defense Attaché U.S. Embassy, Amman, Jordan. Colonel Paddock had this to say about Dean on his recent tour of duty.
Dean also was a master of combining military and diplomatic skills. I will miss his maturity and wise counsel here in the Embassy. I hope he has the opportunity to serve in a position that takes advantage of his great leadership skills.
Back in January 1, 2012 as part of our beach weekend Dean was assigned to chef duty during our beach trip and he prepared his famous Neck Bone and Rice dish. It is a little different than being in an foreign embassy but he was good at that also.
This past year Dean has been away from his best friend and wife Bobbie Johnson Davis.

Most Americans don’t pay attention to the fact that we have hundred of thousands of families that have someone close to them deployed overseas. Bobbie Davis is one of the wives that has had to deal with that for the past year. That separation is about to end soon as Dean has gotten back to Texas after nearly a year in Jordan
My wife and I ran into Bobbie right after Thanksgiving shopping for Christmas trees in Lumberton, NC. Bobbie was upbeat when we were with her but you could tell that having Dean away was not easy.
Bobbie and Dean are fun to be around. If you don’t believe me than ask her grandson Ryder. If you are facebook friends with Bobbie you know Ryder’s face. It is good to know that while Dean’s been away that Ryder has been able to put that trademark smile of Bobbie’s appear.
Dean’s arrival back has me not only excited for Bobbi but all of their family and friends. It is nice to know she won’t have to be one of those families much longer that has someone deployed.
We all need to be thankful we have people like Dean who are willing to serve and a woman like Bobbi that will hold down the home front while he is away.
Welcome home Dean!
