One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for September 20, 2015.
My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.
My work mornings start out with several routines. One of those routines is getting a cup of coffee and sausage burrito from any area McDonald’s. I also have a friend named Carey Read who does the same thing. On Friday when I got my cup of coffee I reflected on my friend and Carey’s neighbor Kenneth Rust. Kenneth owns the McDonald’s that I get my coffee from each morning. In fact he owns seven franchises. His business locations are in both Robeson and Columbus Counties. My Friday morning reflection focused on all that he and his business does for our community.
For me personally Kenneth and his employees have always found ways to help exceed expectations. His business has been very generous in supporting a number of great causes in the community including UNC Pembroke. I still get great pride in going in the Pembroke, NC McDonald’s on days that UNCP has a home football or basketball game and seeing all the employees decked out in UNCP T-Shirts. Kenneth’s employees found a way to make patrons to his business feel like they were in a college friendly town.
Since 2007 one of Kenneth’s former store manager’s Mickey Locklear would always have a McDonald’s presence at UNCP Tailgating. Mickey would always have the McDonald’s flag flying and a welcoming spread for all.
Kenneth doesn’t just do business he finds other ways to stay involved with our community. He plays an active role in his church First Baptist in Lumberton, NC. He is a member of the choir there. Kenneth is also involved in many church outreach efforts to serve others. He keeps most of this private but for those that know him he has a servant leadership heart.

Kenneth is a board member for Southeastern Health in Lumberton, NC. He began his term in January 2015. Having a Rust on this board is not a new venture. Kenneth’s dad Randy Rust has served on the hospital board also. The Rust family believes in service.
Kenneth earned a master’s degree in computer engineering from N.C. State University and has worked as a computer and software engineer in Research Triangle Park, N.C., prior to his affiliation with McDonald’s. He and his wife have two grown sons, James and Jordan.
His wife Lisa also makes big contributions to our community.

The Rust’s don’t clown around when it comes to serving others
Lisa Rust is one of the unassuming people in the Lumberton, NC community. She is leader that does a lot without looking for praise or compliments. She like her husband Kenneth is a hard worker. She is also a dedicated mom and wife.
She is extremely proud of her family including son James who recently graduated from the prestigious George Washington Law School in May 2014.

Lisa like her husband finds lots of ways to serve thru her church. She also is an integral part of a number of boards including Southeastern Health Foundation Board.

Everyone knows that Ronald McDonald is the trademark mascot of McDonald’s. It is not beneath Lisa to take a photo with a clown but when it comes to serving our community neither her or Kenneth are clowning around they are serious and committed. Thanks!!
