One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for October 3, 2015.
My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.
Today is the big finish for the university I work at. UNC Pembroke’s Homecoming like most college campuses have had lots of activities including ground breakings, meetings, pep rallies, a parade, employees spirit competitions, alumni awards, hall of fame introductions, class reunions, tailgating, and a football game played on a rain-soaked field.
It takes a lot of campus leaders to pull off all of these events and at UNC Pembroke we have many. One in particular is Wendy Lowery who is the Vice Chancellor for Advancement.
Wendy comes from a great family in Lumberton, NC and grew up in the Saddletree community. Her mom Gloria Lowery is a very talented artist and she is the professional who designed the current athletic logo at UNC Pembroke.

In 2013 on Founder’s Day at UNC Pembroke Gloria Lowery was honored for her contributions to our university. Her creative work is probably the most powerful and recognizable image UNC Pembroke has.

Her dad Wendell Lowery is a business man who treats his customers at Lowery Limited Auto Sales like family. In April 2013 I was involved in a car accident that totaled my car. That accident caused me to have to have my vehicle towed to Lowery Ltd. Wendell and his son treated me first class and they could not have been nicer or more professional.
Wendy Lowery is a graduate of UNCP earning her undergraduate degree in political science and earned a master’s degree in public administration at UNCP As an alumnus she has passion and pride in her alma mater. Those qualities comes thru in her work.
During her career each step of the way she has assumed positions of increasing responsibility in higher education. Prior to arriving at UNC Pembroke in 2011 she served as associate vice-chancellor in the Office of Institutional Advancement at Fayetteville State University. Wendy began her career at Methodist University as director of the annual fund and parent programs.
Today at UNCP Wendy is getting ready to assist the university’s new chancellor; Robin Cummings. Wendy and the chancellor have big plans to elevate the university’s external giving. Wendy knows she and Dr. Cummings will not be able to do it alone. It will be a team effort. I am quite confident that the two of them will succeed.
When you have to take on new responsibilities it is nice to have professional colleagues who are also your friends. Wendy has one of those in Angela Revels who serves as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Human Resources. They also share a love for the Duke Blue Devils.

I love HR
Angela and Wendy Lowery both worked at Fayetteville State and got to come home. In January 2015 Angela Revels-Bullard was selected as assistant vice-chancellor for the Office of Human Resources at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
In her new role, Angela is responsible for leading human resource management for the entire university, and she provides expertise, advice and counsel to senior management regarding HR issues. A lot of that advice and guidance comes to me.
Angie like Wendy has degrees from UNC Pembroke. She earned an undergraduate degree in business administration from UNCP and a master’s degree in human resources development, leadership and management from Webster University. She also earned the Professional Human Resources certification which takes her professional expertise to another level.
She also is involved on our campus and she is passionate about HR. She wears a “I Love HR” button everyday. During the Homecoming Parade she served as Parade Judge. It was windy and raining but she was smiling and enthusiastic.
Angela also like Wendy is very proud of her family. At the conclusion of the parade I was able to get a photo of her, her mom Charity Revels, and daughter Presleigh with Chancellor Robin Cummings and his wife Rebecca.

Homecoming on a college campus is only good when it has energy. To have energy you must have people who believe in the institution and take pride in it. Two friends I know at UNCP Wendy Lowery and Angela Revels love UNC Pembroke.
We are lucky to have them on our team. Go Braves!!
