A friend of a friend-Morris Bullock-Luckey Welsh-October 14

One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for October 14, 2015.

My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.

On Monday I got the opportunity to interact with a leader that lives in Lumberton but I don’t to get to see much of. UNC Pembroke Chancellor Robin Cummings hosted a lunch for a number of Lumberton businessmen and one of the attendees was Luckey Welsh.

Luckey has always been super gracious to me and has been willing to share a number of his leadership skills and philosophies with me over the years. When I first met him I was a basketball coach and we shared a love for running. When I first met him we were both members of the local Kiwanis Club. He is a man that understands how to form strategic vision and make it become a reality.

While I served as athletic director at UNC Pembroke he made sure his hospital gave its support to the university and our efforts to reinstate football.

Luckey is the former president and CEO of Southeastern Regional Medical Center but is currently the CEO of Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro, NC. Cherry Hospital is one of North Carolina’s three state-run mental health hospitals and is going under a massive construction project.

The new Cherry Hospital, a three-story, 410,000-square-foot psychiatric hospital next to the State Employees Credit Union on West Ash Street, in Goldsboro, NC. The Cherry Hospital is a massive construction project. The total cost of the project, including equipment for the hospital, totals $154,773,000. The funding comes from special indebtedness bonds approved by the N.C. General Assembly. The project needs someone with Luckey’s leadership expertise.

Luckey had been the Chief Executive Officer of Southeastern since 1995. Prior to that appointment, he was the senior vice president and chief operating officer. While he was at Southeastern Regional Medical Center he guided its growth from a small-town hospital to a regionally-focused facility that now has a heart center, comprehensive cancer and imaging services, diabetes center, community health and fitness program and a network of primary care clinics.

Luckey while he was CEO at Southeastern Regional Medical Center was very involved in the community and one place that he spent time getting involved with was the Kiwanis Club of Robeson/Lumberton. He was one of the driving forces behind the club establishing the All-American Golf Tournament that host each August. He also helped the club create the Morris Britt Scholarship which benefits a Lumberton High School Senior who wants to attend UNC Pembroke.

One of the other attendees at Monday’s lunch was Morris Bullock who works at Southeastern Health today. He and Luckey Welsh have been friends for a number of years.

The Recruiter of Physicians

Morris Bullock, is the director of physician recruitment for Southeastern Health. He has been at the hospital and seen eastern and western wings added to the main building. The Southeastern Heart Center opened in 1990, followed by the Gibson Cancer Center in 1995 and a new bed tower in 2003.

Morris job is to attract physicians to come to the area. He has to work long hours and sell the virtues of what our community has to offer. He like me learned a lot of great leadership lessons working alongside Luckey.

On Monday I was lucky to be breaking bread with both of Luckey and Morris.
