A friend of a friend-Harry Ivey-Robert Jones-November 14

One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for November 14, 2015.

My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.

On Thursday night I got the opportunity to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the City of Lumberton. They honored four men who had a combined 106 years of service to the City. One of the honorees was Dr. Robert Jones.

Dr. Robert Jones has served the city of Lumberton as the Councilman for Precinct 6 since 1991. He was born in Scotland County and after a military career in the US Army began his pursuit of education and entered into a long career as a public educator.

During the program a parade of people came to the podium to heap praise on Robert Jones. He also had some of his key phrases banter about like “Partner” and “Precious”. At the end of the evening he was presented with the Distinguished Service Medal from the City of Lumberton, NC.

Dr. Jones received his undergraduate degree from Winston-Salem State, a Master of Arts from NC Central, and his Doctorate from Nova University.

He influenced many young people at Lumberton Junior High School, Carroll Middle School, and W.H Knuckles as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal. He has received numerous awards from many organizations and associations.

He is married to Joyce Jones who also was an outstanding educator. His wife was my daughter Becca elementary school teacher and to this day she always asks about her. Dr Jones and Joyce have two children Rhondette and Bobby.

Another Councilman that was honored was Harry Ivey.

46 Years of Service

Mr. Ivey has been serving Lumberton, NC  as Precinct 4 Councilman since 1969.

To put 1969 in perspective Mr. Ivey has been on the City Council during the terms of eight US Presidents, eight North Carolina Governors, and the 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2010 Census. Everytime the US Government released the census data for Lumberton Harry Ivey name appeared as Precinct 4 Councilman.

He started out with a humble goal of getting roads paved in his mill village neighborhood. In 46 years he saw much more accomplished.  He has seen expansion of sewer services, establishment of a fire station, and police substation.

He has also seen a ball field evolve into a park that bears his name.

He and his wife Lue Ellen have been married for 55 years and have two children Wanda Allen and Buddy Ivey.

At the end of the evening Harry Ivey and Robert Jones along with the rest of the Lumberton City Council passed a resolution that outgoing Mayor Raymond Pennington after serving as mayor for 24 years would have the athletic complex located at Northeast Park named in his honor.

Just one more act of service on the part of Harry and Robert.
