One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for November 22, 2015.
My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.
It is amazing what you think about in a day. Today is November 22nd and 52 years ago today I was sitting in a 5th grade class at St. Margaret’s Elementary School in Morristown, NJ when the principal came into the class crying and told us we were all going home.
The President of the United States John Fitzgerald Kennedy had been shot in Dallas, TX on November 22, 1963 riding in an open car. I thought about the moment today.
I also thought about Coker College since UNC Pembroke women’s basketball team defeated them 63-51 on campus yesterday.
Thinking about Coker I had to turn my thoughts to the men’s basketball coach at Coker Dan Scmotzer. He is a coach famous for a lot of things including a regular plea to his team that is always the same “Come on Coker”.
Dan has been the head men’s basketball coach at Coker for the past 28 seasons. He was inducted into the Coker Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012 along with his 1988 team, the first of three over the years that have won at least 20 games in a season. He has coached two All-American players and three Academic All-Americans.
Dan Schmotzer is one of the funniest and most entertaining college basketball coaches of all time. Two quick stories on Dan:
- Dan Schmotzer has a hard time remembering the names of referees. So he writes their names on the palm of his hand. When he is upset with a call he looks at his hand to get the correct name of the ref he is upset with.
- Dan was never more animated than during a basketball game at Erskine ten years ago. He was upset at an official’s calling of the game and attempted to get his attention but the official just ignored him. Dan was not going to be denied and attempted to draw a technical foul. Still the official was having none of it, and continued to ignore Dan’s pleas from the sideline. Finally exasperated, Dan jumped to the scorer’s table and ran atop it all the way down the sideline to the opposing team’s bench. There he leaped off the table landing with an arm raised like he was John Travolta out of scene from “Saturday Night Fever” despite all of that he still was not whistled for a technical foul.
Dan Schmotzer has a twin brother name Dave. Dave coaches the baseball team at Coker.

The Friend of the Friend-DAVE SCHMOTZER
Dan and Dave Schmotzer are identical twins born five minutes apart. Dave is the oldest. In is uncanny but they use a lot of the same sayings.
They have both made tremendous impacts at Coker College who by the way has a UNCP Grad named Lynn Griffin as their Athletic Director.
