One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for December 5, 2015.
My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.
Today is an important day in our family. Our daughter Becca Kenney celebrates a birthday.
December 5, 1982 was the day Becca was born and it was a rainy, cold Sunday with 20 MPH winds blowing out of the north. With temperatures in the 30’s it was not a pleasant day. None of that mattered when I got to lay eyes on Becca with her blue eyes and jet black hair. Becca as she slept in her incubator crib in the maternity ward of C.J Harris Hospital was my bundle of joy.

Looking at her warmed me up and made me forget about the weather outside.
She was born in Sylva, NC which is located in Jackson County, NC and was the second of five children my wife Mira gave birth to. She was the only girl amongst four brothers. Over the past thirty years she has learned about competition, sports, coaching, and practical jokes from her four brothers. She has also taught each of them lessons about persistence, hard work, compassion, and the importance of education.
When Becca was born we already had a son named Geoff that was 16 months old. I think having two children so close together galvanized my wife and I.

We were living 300 miles away from my wife’s parents and 600 miles from mine. We had to figure out what parenting was all about at the ages of 28 and 26 without a safety net. Geoff and Becca were the recipients of some trial and error parenting decisions. I know the two of them have a special bond because of those experiences

Becca has been a college instructor and coach. She knows what it takes to lead a group and to teach a college class.
She has earned two degrees from college and still has aspirations to possibly earn another. She is currently teaching at a high school in Fayetteville, NC and goes to class each day prepared. She also is married to an outstanding young man named John Revels. John is a North Carolina State Trooper and lives in Pembroke, NC very close to his family.

John has two sisters that have treated Becca as a sister. John’s two sisters are Kristie Hunt and Amy Locklear.

Becca grew up around four brothers and had no sisters.
John Revels grew up with two sisters and no brothers. His sisters are Kristie Hunt and Amy Locklear. Both of John’s sisters are also moms.
Becca gets to interact not only with John’s sisters but with their children. Amy has a boy and daughter. Kristie has college age children. In fact Kristie has a beautiful daughter named Genna who is a junior in college at UNC Pembroke. Becca baby brother Mack is junior at East Carolina University.

Amy Locklear is married to Wendell Locklear whose mom has been a long time employee at UNC Pembroke. Wendell’s mom Ms. Effie Locklear just recently retired from UNC Pembroke in October.
Amy has a son named Aiden and brand new infant daughter named Adisyn.
So today Becca Kenney will be able to be wished a Happy Birthday by many including her four brothers and two sister in laws. On July 18, 2017 she became a mom and I became a grandfather. Her daughter Bryleigh will be part of her birthday celebration today.
I am proud of my daughter and glad she is surrounded by people who care about her.
