A friend of a friend-Tony Chavis-Tony Chavis-December 20

One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for December 20, 2015.

My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.

UNC Pembroke is on winter break so activity on campus has become very quiet. The one exception is the Jones Center where athletes and coaches are still hard at it with practice and games especially in the sports of wrestling and basketball. It also means that the man in charge of the facility is also still on the job with things to do. That responsibility falls to Tony Chavis. Who serves as the program director of the Jones Center.

If you work at UNC Pembroke you know that we have name duplications with employees. For instance we have two employees named Tony Chavis, two employees named Kimberly Locklear, and two named Charlene and Sharlene Locklear. It can sometimes be confusing for new hires.

Tony Chavis the program director is also a big Braves fan and he is very passionate about the success of all UNCP teams. This Tony Chavis is referred to people on campus as “Jones Center Tony”.

Over the past twenty years “Jones Center Tony” has kept the scoreboard, scorebook, play clock, served as a line judge, and many other responsibilities during a UNC Pembroke Athletic Contest. Sometimes he has even had to be told to tone it down with in game commentary to officials or umpires. He is all in on when the black and gold is playing.

The other Tony Chavis that works at UNC Pembroke is sometimes called “Telephone Tony”.

The Panther Man

Tony Chavis who is known as “Telephone Tony” at UNC Pembroke is officially a network technician for the Department of Information Technology (DoIT). He is a wizard at doing a lot of things related to computer set-ups, handling challenging technology questions, and of course helping activate any changes related to telephones at UNC Pembroke. When he working with someone he gives them great customer service.

What “Telephone Tony” also is synonymous on campus is being a gigantic Carolina Panthers fan. In fact when I came back to UNCP in 1998 I learned that he was an original PSL owner for the team. He has been going strong as a Panther fan for twenty seasons and is basking in the glow of a fabulous season.Carolina-Panthers-Panthers-Purrsuit

Tony also is known for his taste in headwear. He often is seen around campus wearing a stylish beret.

These two Tonys have more in common than just their name. They love the place they work at. That is what makes UNC Pembroke special. We have employees that treat the university as more than just a workplace.

I don’t call that Tony I call that class.
