A friend of a friend-Mike Jiminez-Daniel Perdue-December 22

One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for December 22, 2015.

My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.

Dring my fifteen years as athletic director at UNC Pembroke I also taught classes. Early in my tenure I sometimes taught 7-8 hours each semester. It certainly made multi-tasking intense when the role of college instructor and athletic administrator would collide.

One of the perks of being a college instructor was I got to know the student athletes in a different role. I got to see them perform with their brains and intellect. Many were excellent students.  In addition to teaching I also supervised interns and graduate assistants. in that realm I got to see them perform in a professional work environment.

One of those student athletes was long distance runner named Mike Jimenez whose friends call him “Himmie”. He was a standout runner for UNCP in the early 2000’s. He posted some of the better 8K and 10K times in school history.

Today Mike is the Manager for Fitness Services at Southeastern Health. He has been a big influence on a number of clients and fellow employees. One of those clients he has influenced is my wife Mira.

Mike has an infectious personality that motivates those around him to want to stay fit and active. We need more leaders like him in our community. Mike and his wife Ashley have a new daughter named Sophia.

Another person who works in the Lumberton who is friends with Mike is Daniel Perdue. Daniel works at the Lumberton Crossfit facility which is also part of Southeastern Health.

Daniel like Mike Jimenez graduated from UNC Pembroke and for part of a year worked for me as a graduate assistant doing various athletic administrative duties mostly game management. He went on to teach in the Public Schools before settling on his new career as a Crossfit instructor.

CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. Today in addition to those individuals millions more participate in Cross Fit workouts including my wife.

Daniel like Mike is an encouraging leader who gives people the right mix of encouragement and challenges.

Glad we have both in our community.
