A friend of a friend-Michael Perry-Hillary Coleman-December 30

One thing I have learned is that good friends have other good friends. This is a series of stories about “friends of my friends”. The post below is the story for December 30, 2015.

My goal in 2015 is to learn or get re-acquainted with 365 people and doing a daily post on the “the friend of a friend” is helping me get closer to my goal.

This is my next last post of 2015.  As the year comes to a close I realize there are many people in my life that I didn’t get to write a post about during the past 12 months.

2015 gave me much more good news to deal with than sad but there has been rough patches. I have lost a sister, friends, and seen quite a few community leaders that I respected pass away. I also have had to assist UNC Pembroke in dealing with the loss of three students this past semester. Each of those was difficult.

I am tempted not to profile any more friends that have a sad component to their story but there is one person that I have thought a lot about during the past 6 months that I can’t get off my mind. I am going to tell her story. Actually I am going to let her tell her story since she has a blog also.

In 2009 I taught a class at UNC Pembroke called Freshman Seminar. In that class I had two students that were in a relationship. One was Michael Perry and the other was Hillary Coleman. They both became my advisees until they declared a major. I loved spending time with both of them.

Hillary today works in ICU for UNC Hospital. While she was at UNC Pembroke she was SGA Vice President (2011-2012). She was a young leader who was grounded spiritually, very smart, and happy to be the future Mrs. Michael Perry.

Michael Perry after attending UNC Pembroke became a firefighter in Burlington, NC. He also proposed to Hillary and she said yes.

He started his job as a firefighter in March 2014. On Sunday June 28, 2015 he was killed in car accident. Hillary created a blog in his memory. Below the two photos  you can read excerpts from Hillary’s blog.

I hope you will take time to read it and if the mood moves you think about leaving her a comment.

The Friend of the Friend-MICHAEL PERRY

Hillary’s Blog

Michael Braxton Perry, my high school sweetheart fiancee’, went to be with his savior Jesus Christ on June 28, 2015. This was a tragic passing for our family and very unexpected. Since that night I have had many thoughts, memories, nightmares, and heartache that has been weighing on me dearly. This blog is a place for me to share what I am going through so that means this blog may be filled with happy memories, a roller coaster of emotions, current family moments, and what I may be feeling. Some of the submissions will be written in letter form as if I am writing directly to Michael. So, please kindly read these with an open heart and mind.

Thinking of you Hillary I was blessed to have both you and Michael as students and advisees. Stay strong you are special!

  1. I just realized that I never commented back to you! I shared it on my social media sites when you first wrote this, but never did comment back. You have no idea just how special this blog post is to me! How thoughtful of you to think and write about us! Michael and I have always thought so highly of you and loved talking with you! Since the first day of our freshman year when we walked into your class, you made us feel so welcome and “at home”. You are truly one of our favorite professors/mentors that we had the pleasure of growing and building a relationship with for four years! Thank you again for your kind words and thoughts and prayers! You will never know just how “special” this blog post made me feel!

    1. Hope you are doing well-no doubt in my mind you are “special”-

      1. Thank you, I am. Hope you and your family are well!
