North Carolina-Winter Storms-January 24

North Carolina People, Places, and Things-January 24

I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.

In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special.

On Friday January 22, 2016 we encountered a freezing rain event in the Fayetteville, NC portion of North Carolina. That winter storm made me think about what were the really big storms that had impacted my part of North Carolina.

I did find out that the largest snowfall total in the history of the state occurred in the mountains. Depending on what definition you use here are the two biggest in state history. For a 24 hour period of time the 36 inches of snow that fell at Mt Mitchell on March 13, 1993 is the record. The most snow ever from one storm occurred between April 2-6, 1987 in Swain County at Newfound Gap inside the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. That four day storm resulted in 60 inches (5 feet) of snow.

For the coastal plains of North Carolina where Fayetteville, Lumberton, and Laurinburg are located the snowfall totals are not as significant as mountain snowfall totals but there has been a recent storm that was memorable.

In 2000 there was a storm that was part of four separate storms that occurred in the month of January 2000. The third of these storms that occurred on January 25, 2000 set an all-time single storm snow accumulation for Raleigh, NC with 20.3 inches. Snow fall totals for Fayetteville, Laurinburg, and Lumberton were also large. The other storms occurred on January 18-January 23 and one last one on January 30.

January 2000 set records for the most snowfall in any one month for most of the state.
