North Carolina People, Places, and Things-February 29
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special.
Today is called “Leap Day”. People with a birthday of February 29 are obviously not as common as other days in the year because it only occurs once every four years.
I went scrolling to see if I could find anyone I might know with a February 29th birthday and I came across a Cary NC resident and former NBA Basketball player named Chuck Brown. Today Chuck works as a scout for the New Orleans Pelicans. He was previously a coach in the NBA D-League with the Roanoke Dazzle and L.A. D-Fenders.
Chucky Brown played for NC State after starring for 4 seasons at North Brunswick HS in Leland, NC.

Brown is a NBA record holder. He suited up for 12 different teams. It’s a record he shares with two other players. In addition to the NBA teams he also played in Italy and the CBA. Brown became the second player ever to win championships in the CBA and NBA in the same season (1995) when he suited up for the Yakima Sun Kings and then signed on as a free agent in Houston.
What Chucky Brown has is the legacy of being Mr. Clutch. In 1995 when Houston Rockets Carl Herrera needed shoulder surgery, Brown became a key member of the rotation as a defender and rebounder. His big contribution was in Game 5 of the 1995 West semifinals. Brown had 15 points and eight rebounds while Clyde Drexler was sick.
