North Carolina-Craven County-March 26

North Carolina People, Places, and Things-March 26

I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.

In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special.

Since 1739 Craven County has had county status. It’s county seat is New Bern which is a pretty neat town that has gone under some nice renovations.

The population of Craven County slightly exceeds 100,000.

The history of New Bern is 300 years long. Founded in 1710 by a Swiss nobleman, the town was named after Bern, the capital of Switzerland and is the second oldest town in North Carolina.

Upon the completion of Tryon Palace in 1770, New Bern served as the first capital of North Carolina. It survived both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, was the birthplace of Pepsi, and today, it continues to be a cultural hub for the coast and all of North Carolina.

Craven County also has two rivers converge in New Bern making it have a unique waterfront. The two rivers are the Neuse and Trent. You can see New Bern on left of the rivers merging.

Also in Craven County you will find the 157,000 acre Croatan National Forest, nationally recognized for its trails and recreation opportunities.
