North Carolina People, Places, and Things-April 2
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special.
The easternmost county in the State of North Carolina is Dare County.
The county gets its name to Virginia Dare. She was the first child born in the Americas to English parents, and was born in what is now Dare County.
I did a post on her back in January-link below:
There are lots of disputes in North Carolina about largest county. Dare makes an interesting claim of being the largest in the state. The catch is only 24% of the county is land the rest is water including a big chunk being the Pamlico Sound. When you count land mass Dare checks in as the 68th largest in the state. The largest land mass in any one North Carolina County rest with Robeson County.
Dare County boast some important milestones not only in North Carolina history but in the annals of world history. Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk are two places that quickly come to mind.
One thing I learned about Dare County that I did not know was at one time the largest city in the county was Buffalo City.
In the 19th century and early 20th century it boasted a population of over 3,000. Today Buffalo City is a ghost town. It hitched its economic engine to logging and moonshine and both industries came and went.
