North Carolina People, Places, and Things-April 6
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special.
Davidson County which lies in the Piedmont of North Carolina was founded in 1822 and was cut out of Rowan County. Davidson County is depicted below in red.
The county seat for Davidson is Lexington but its largest city is Thomasville and the county has a population of over 160,000.
I knew Davison County has some unique features to it including barbeque.
A trip to Davidson County simply isn’t complete without tasting their world famous, Lexington-style pork barbecue.
A lot of the restaurants in Davidson use a method passed down for generations, this native delicacy is pit cooked over hickory wood and then mixed with a secret vinegar-based sauce, or dip as the locals call it.
What I didn’t know was that Davidson County has a growing wine industry.
Davidson County stands at the southern gateway to the Yadkin Valley Wine Appellation, one of the United States’ newest federally designated viticulture regions. The region encompasses seven North Carolina counties, boasting over 26 wineries, and is situated on rolling hills – picturesque countryside and acres of land that once grew tobacco but now produce grapes.

Another Lexington winery is Weathervane
Don’t know if wine and barbecue go together but Davidson County has both.
