North Carolina-Duplin County-April 13

North Carolina People, Places, and Things-April 13

I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.

In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special.

Duplin County has been in existence since 1750 and was carved out of New Hanover County. The county seat is Kenansville and the county has a population of around 60,000.

Map of Duplin County is outlined in red.

One of Duplin County amazing statistics is related to hogs. Duplin County has more than 2.2 million pigs. They have more pigs than any other county in the United States according to Wikipedia. North Carolina in fact has more hogs than people according to 2010 numbers- a population of 9.2 million people and 10 millions hogs statewide.

Pork is big business in North Carolina and Duplin places a big role in the industry.

Pork production consists of six separate stages: research and development, hog farming, meat processing, finishing and packaging, product distribution, and retail. For North Carolina, hog farming itself is the most important of these value chain links. North Carolina firms participate in all stages of raising hogs. Astoundingly, hog farming in North Carolina is valued at well more than US $1 billion. When it comes to factory farms that produce pigs Duplin County is at the top.

In its early history Duplin County first industry  was the naval stores industry.

naval stores

The harvesting of rosin from the abundant longleaf pine forests to make tar, pitch and turpentine, provided barter and income for the early settlers and remained a significant part of the economy up until the late 1800’s.

I wrote a post about naval stores early this month.
