North Carolina People, Places, and Things-April 16
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special.
Barlett Snipes Durham donated some land to the city of Durham, NC so they could build a train station. Durham County, NC and the city are both named in his honor.
Map of Durham County is highlighted in red.
Durham County sits in the heart of what most North Carolinians refer to as the Triangle-Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC. Durham County makes up about 260,000 residents of eh nearly 1.7 million people who live in the Triangle. The county seat of Durham County is the city of Durham.
Durham County was founded in 1881 by carving up parts of Orange and Wake County. In 1911 another small part of Wake County was giving to Durham County.
Bartlett Durham was a doctor and never married.
For donating 4 acres of land for a railroad station around which a city arose he gained notoriety. He grew up 12 miles west of Chapel Hill. He was born Nov. 3, 1824, to William L. and Mary Snipes Durham, Bartlett was a fourth generation of Orange County Durhams.
Legend has it he studied medicine first with a family acquaintance – perhaps Dr. James Webb of Hillsborough – and then in Philadelphia, maybe at Jefferson Medical College, maybe the University of Pennsylvania – no record survives, in any case. And in any case, in 1847 or 1848 Durham apparently bought about 100 acres of land in the vicinity of the present Durham Bulls Athletic Park and American Tobacco ruin and relocated himself and his practice there.
He died in 1859 at the age of 34.
