North Carolina-Edgecombe County-April 20

North Carolina People, Places, and Things-April 20

I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.

In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special.

What I didn’t know about Edgecombe County was that it has history with an Native American Indian Tribe called the Tuscarora. Edgecombe County was founded in 1741 from Bertie County. Today it’s county seat is Tarboro. Prior to the Civil War Tarboro actually had a prominent role as a port. Link on the history of Tarboro below. Today it is a town of 10,000. It has a colonial history.

A map of Edgecombe County is found below in red.

Edgecombe County is home to an important 20th Century military leader Hugh Shelton. Shelton was born in 1942 and was appointed to become a 4 star general by President Bill Clinton.

Good interview on Hugh Shelton on UNC TV

One quirk I did know about was that Rocky Mount is Edgecombe’s largest city but it borders lie in two counties. Rocky Mount has a population of about 50,000 but it’s residents lie in both Nash and Edgecombe County.
