North Carolina People, Places, and Things-May 22
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special.
As a small boy growing up in Northern New Jersey we always would get a treat after church on Sunday morning. We would make a trip to Danziger’s Bakery. It is sad in America today a grocery store chain is what most of us have to deal with related to bakeries. I am somewhat excited that Lumberton NC will soon get a Panera Bread. It won’t replace my memories of Danziger’s but it will help.
Today in Morristown NJ that Danziger’s Bakery is better known as Swiss Chalet. A co-owner of that business bought Danziger’s Bakery several decades ago. Swiss Chalet is located on South and Elm Street in Morristown NJ.
One of Danziger’s location was in a shopping center that once housed an A&P grocery store. My dad and mom would let each of my brothers and sisters pick one item-donut-cookie-cannoli for the day after churc. The family also would get poppy seed hard rolls that would last us for a few days.
Over time Mr. Eddie Danziger had three bakeries in Morristown NJ. I still crave his crumb cake and chocolate mocha cake which we often would get for special family occasions.
When I moved to North Carolina from New Jersey I would often get the question what do I miss most. Besides my family the answer was always the same -bakeries and pizza joints.
A list of the 15 best bakeries in the state of North Carolina are listed below and I am embarrassed to say I have only been to one on the list Ameile’s French Bakery and Café in Charlotte. It is located in NoDa close to some great Charlotte breweries.
