North Carolina People, Places, and Things-May 24
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special.
Ihave had the privelage at a past UNC Pembroke Library fundraiser to listen to the talented Bland Simpson sing and talk about his writing. I go intrigued to go listen to Bland because of the compelling stories my friend Jeff Neelon told about him.

Bland Simpson, teaches creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is author of The Great Dismal and The Mystery of Beautiful Nell Cropsey. A member of the Red Clay Ramblers, the internationally acclaimed string band, he has collaborated on such musicals as Diamond Studs, Fool Moon, Kudzu, and King Mackerel & The Blues Are Running.
Bland has also written a number of articles for Our State magazine. List is below.
The Red Clay Ramblers are in their 44th year and are a North Carolina string band whose repertoire reflects their roots in old-time mountain music, as well as bluegrass, country rock, New Orleans jazz, gospel, and the American musical.
