North Carolina People, Places, and Things-June 12
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special. Everyday this year I am doing a post on what I have learned new.
My wife and I have a recent anniversary tradition. We pick a city in the Carolinas get a hotel room and play tourist. We have done that for Charlotte, Columbia, Durham, Raleigh, and this past weekend Winston-Salem.
I spent some time on line looking for unique things about Winston-Salem and came across a great blog post on Ed Bradley a former Wake Forest football player who went on to star in the NFL and win super bowl rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He also had a son who played football for Western Carolina and since I coached basketball there from 1980-85 I connected to the article and kept reading. I also connected to Ed’s experience coming to the south and smelling tobacco in the air for the first time. Ed could smell that in Winston-Salem and I had the same experience across the state in Greenville, NC. Ed attended college in North Carolina after growing up in Connecticut and I did the same after growing up in New Jersey.
Want to thank a college soccer coach named Jay Callahan for his post on Ed Bradley and letting me share it. Jay does regular posts on famous and important people with ties to Winston Salem.
Jay is in his tenth year as the Head Soccer Coach of Salem College, a NCAA Division III program located in Winston Salem, NC. He also doubles as the colleges Sports Info Director. Photo of Jay below.
He has led the Salem soccer program to 7 straight seasons with at least 10 wins, and 8 of the last 9 seasons. He was selected four years in a row as the Great South Coach of the Year (2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015).
