North Carolina-Frank Adams III-June 16

North Carolina People, Places, and Things-June 16

I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.

In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special. Everyday this year I am doing a post on what I have learned new.

Today begins the 116th edition of the US Open one of the four majors in professional golf. This year’s event will be played at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.

One of the 156 golfers participating in the event is a native of Laurinburg, NC. His name is Frank Adams III. He will be playing in a threesome with a 2:42 p.m. tee time today. His path to his first US Open was not an easy one.

What makes this tournament interesting is you can qualify to play in this event. In 2016 9,847 people attempted to qualify. When you compare that to the 156 who are playing (many who have exemptions) today the odds are stiff against you.

Frank Adams III found his way into the US Open via the qualifying route not an exemption. A professional or any amateur golfer with a USGA men’s handicap index of 1.4 or lower, can attempt to qualify for the US Open.

The qualifying process is this: Enter a local qualifier. If you finish high enough, advance to a sectional qualifier. If you finish high enough, advance into the 116th US Open.

Frank who is 37 and lives in Salisbury entered a local US Open qualifier in Pinehurst, NC and shot a 69. On Monday June 6th, he played 36 holes at Ansley Country Club in Roswell, Georgia, finished third at that sectional qualifier and punched his ticket to play in today’s U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.

My wife’s brother Lance Gibson married Frank Adams Jr. sister Jane Adams.

Frank Adams Jr. is the dad to Frank Adams III. So our entire family is pulling for Frank.
