North Carolina People, Places, and Things-June 19
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special. Everyday this year I am doing a post on what I have learned new.
When your background is in sports, exercise, coaching, and physical education you don’t often learn something new about a sport/game. Today I heard about PickleBall and learned that there is a North Carolina Chapter called North Carolina Pickle Ball.
The State of North Carolina also has courts in variety of locations. The picture below is from Beech Mountain, NC which built three courts for the game in 2014.
Pickleball is a paddle sport invented in 1965 in Bainbridge Island just outside of Seattle-by two area friends. It is now widely considered one of the fastest growing sports in the country.
Pickleball is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It is played on a court approximately 1/3 the size of a tennis court, and uses a paddle that is hard like a ping-pong paddle (but larger) and a plastic whiffle ball.
The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced competitive game for more experienced players. People of all ages can enjoy the game.
From what I can find online there is Pickle Ball in Boliva, Wake Forest, Cary, Charlotte, Mt. Airy, Brevard, Winston-Salem, and of course Beech Mountain, NC.
