North Carolina People, Places, and Things-July 27
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special. Everyday this year I am doing a post on what I have learned new.
Not many counties in the country are named after college professors but Mitchell County in North Carolina is one.
Map of Mitchell County is below outlined in red.
Mitchell County received its name in honor of Elisha Mitchell (1818-1857). Mitchell, a professor at the University of North Carolina, passed away during his climb of North Carolina’s highest mountain, Black Dome.
After the professor’s death, Black Dome was renamed Mount Mitchell in honor of Elisha Mitchell.
