North Carolina People, Places, and Things-July 28
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special. Everyday this year I am doing a post on what I have learned new.
North Carolina has no shortage of festivals. I came across an article this past week chronicling the top 25 Jazz Festivals in the country.
http://www.topeventsusa.com/top-jazz-events-USA.html
At the top of the list was the North Carolina Jazz Festival which is held the first weekend in February every year. The 2017 event will be the NC Jazz Festival’s 37th
This festival was started in 1980 by Dr. Harry Van Velsor, a local dermatologist, and consummate jazz lover. Photo of Dr. Van Velsor is below.
Besides great music, Wilmington, NC has many charms. The water front cafes and historic homes if you close your eyes listening to jazz might think you are in New Orleans.
The festival is all held at the Hilton Riverfront shown at picture above on the left side. It is the large white building. On Friday and Saturday evenings musicians play in the traditional seven sets of six or seven players, each set with a different leader. Each night there will be 4 ½ hour concerts.
