North Carolina People, Places, and Things-July 29
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special. Everyday this year I am doing a post on what I have learned new.
The military is important to the economy of the state of North Carolina.
North Carolina is home to a military base for four of the five United States armed forces branches, the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard and Marines. The bases are spread throughout the state but the largest is army base Fort Bragg, NC.
There were a total of 1.3 million active duty military and more than 800,000 reserve forces as of 2016, according to Defense Department data. Total active duty personnel for the five armed service were 471,397 for the Army, 326,276 for the Navy, 309,682 for the Air Force, 183,917 for the Marine Corps and 39,084 for the Coast Guard.
The states with the most active duty and reserve members of the military, as of May 2016, were:
- California: 190,160
- Texas: 173,118
- North Carolina: 129,049
In addition to active duty personnel stationed in the state there are also military contracts awarded to defense contractors. In North Carolina thru prime contracts awarded by the Department of Defense that total for North Carolina in 2014 was 2.49 billion dollars.
