North Carolina People, Places, and Things-August 27
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special. Everyday this year I am doing a post on what I have learned new.
Pasquotank County might be one of the North Carolina county “tongue twisters”. It is pronounced PASS-kwah-tank.
The county was created in 1668 when it was carved out of the large Albemarle Precinct and its county seat is Elizabeth City. Elizabeth City is home to Elizabeth City State University.
Map below of the Pasquotank County outlined in red.
Luther Lassiter, who had the nickname “Wimpy” widely considered one of the greatest pool players of all time, was born and raised in Pasquotank County.
Luther was considered by many to be one of the greatest nine-ball players of all time and died in . 1988 in Elizabeth City, NC.
Luther Lassiter was given his nickname for his habit of devouring hot dogs in high school much like the Wimpy character in the Popeye comic strip ate hamburgers. Luther in 1935 dropped out of school at 16 and began hustling pool games.
Great story in Sports Illustrated in 1964 about Luther Lassiter.
I found a YouTube clips of “Wimpy”.
