North Carolina People, Places, and Things-September 2
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special. Everyday this year I am doing a post on what I have learned new.
This post is going to talk about fantasy football, deep sea salvage, whiskey, lintheads, and Golden Valley NC.
Wednesday night is a special night of the year for me and my Lumberton NC friends. It is the night we held our fantasy football league draft. It is called the Linthead Football League.
The name “linthead” comes from the Linthead Football League Commissioner day job of working in the North Carolina textile industry. In fact many of the league members are part of the textile industry. Linthead is a derogatory term for an employee of a textile mill, particularly in the American South.
Our draft includes some pre-draft awards including presenting the 2015 league champion with a cap embossed with a ball of lint. Our 2015 winner Joe Terranova is seen decked out with all of his outlandish swag. Check out his belt.
After the draft is concluded the cigars and whiskey come out. I am no saint but cigars and whiskey are not for me. I do stick around and join in the hopeful exuberance each fantasy owner has on how good our fantasy teams will be this season. Whiskey helps with that exuberance.
When the cigars where lit a bottle of Defiant Whiskey appeared on the table with a bucket of ice. I looked at the bottle and saw it was from Golden Valley, North Carolina. That is a new town on me.
What I learned is Golden Valley is located in Rutherford County and is close to Bostic NC. It is about halfway between Morganton and Rutherfordton, NC on US 64. What I also learned about Defiant is that my fellow Linthead Football League members really like it including Ron Roach.
Ron and his wife Paula-Ron may have a glass of Defiant in his left hand.
The company that distills Deviant is called Blue Ridge Distillery Co. was founded by Tim Ferris who also owns a salvage diving company called Defiant Marine.
Tim shown below hoisting a bottle in the distillery.
Defiant Whisky like other NC Distilleries effective June 19, 2015 could take advantage of a law change that allows craft distilleries to sell one commemorative bottle per year to each visitor touring their establishment beginning Oct. 1, 2015. I have a feeling that members of the Linthead Football League will be taking a road trip sometime soon.
