North Carolina People, Places, and Things-November 5
I am the dad to five adult children. As they were growing up I attempted to remind them they were special and to implore them to learn something new. My goal was to do that daily.
In 2016 my goal is to learn something new daily on the people, places, and things that make North Carolina special. Everyday this year I am doing a post on what I have learned new.
Today’s blog post involves Latin. Transylvania County which was created in 1861 by carving out pieces of Henderson and Jackson County derives its name from two Latin words. Trans-meaning across-Sylva-referring to woods. Transylvania means “Across the Woods”.
The County Seat for Transylvania is Brevard, NC. A map of the county is shown below outlines in red.
The “Land of Waterfalls”, Transylvania County has more than 250 falls in its three forest parks, and Whitewater Falls, a 400-feet high waterfall, is the highest cascade east of the Rocky Mountains.
Upper Whitewater Falls is shown below:
Brevard NC has a college and in fact one of my four sons worked there as a college soccer coach last year. Brevard is also home to one of my favorite breweries-Oskar Blues
Founded in Lyons, Colorado in 1998, Oskar Blues was the first American craft brewery to can beer.
Located in an industrial park a few miles from downtown Brevard, the owner Dale Katechis built at this location in 2013 due to its proximity to Pisgah National Forest with great mountain biking and for the pure mountain water.
Oskar Blues has recently purchased two other smaller breweries in 2016-Cigar City in Tampa, FL and Perrin Brewing in Grand Rapids, MI. Oskar Blues is currently available in all 50 U.S. states, Washington D.C., the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, parts of Canada and Australia.
