@Pepperdine @AdvanceAuto January 18

My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.

The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and  turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.

In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.

I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University:  Pepperdine University

Location:  Malibu, CA

If you read enough biographies you realize that our country has produced some amazing success stories. Not just stories of leaders who accumulated great material wealth but of leaders who did that and shared it with others. Pepperdine University owes it creation to a leader who did just that.

George Pepperdine in 1909, founded Western Auto Supply Company, a specialty retail chain of stores that supplied automobile parts and accessories, with an initial investment of five dollars.  Western Auto grew at an exponential rate and eventually operated approximately 1,200 stores across the United States.

In 1998 a merger occurred between Western Auto and Advance Auto Parts which led to the end of the Western Auto brand and its product distribution network.

Over the next two decades Pepperdine became alarmed at something he observed. He worried about the alarming rate at which Christian young men and women lost interest in their faith after going on to higher education. Pepperdine University was founded in 1937 as Pepperdine College to address that.

Pepperdine remained thoroughly involved with the college for the rest of his life, frequently being seen on campus with Mrs. Pepperdine, attending chapel, board meetings, school functions, and sporting events. He died in 1962.

The campus comprises 830 acres and there is a reason that Pepperdine consistently is rated as one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. It sits on a palisade overlooking the Pacific Ocean. That is a pretty good start.
