My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: Virginia Tech
Location: Blacksburg, VA
A long time family friend just got his first head coaching job as football coach at Reinhardt University in Georgia.
His name is James Miller and he attended Virginia Tech were he played football and wore #76.
On October 1, 1872, Virginia Tech opened as the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. All students were cadets organized into a battalion of two companies with an enrollment of 132. Over time the university lost their all military requirement for students and from that emerged a tradition.
Virginia Tech has a unique way of honoring the transition to including civilian students they get included in a military battle of sorts. Civilians and cadets engage in a no-holds-barred snowball fight during the first big snowfall of every year. Video below is from 2013.
For the eight of the past nine years, the University Undergraduate Student Leader of the Year has been a cadet at Virginia Tech.
