My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.

The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and  turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.

In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.

I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University:  Luther College

Location:  Decorah, IA

Two of my favorite people in the world are Ben and Heather Miller. They both graduated from Luther College. Heather is Children and Youth Director at First Presbyterian Church in Lumberton, NC and Ben is the highly successful Men’s Basketball Coach at UNC Pembroke.

Decorah, Iowa is located in the Northeast Corner of Iowa.  Luther College was founded in 1861 by Norwegians immigrants.

Two big attractions for students at Luther are college sports and the vibrancy of their college music programs.

At Luther over 500 of the 2,200 students are involved with college athletics. Ben Miller was one of those students while enrolled and he played basketball. Today he leads a program at UNC Pembroke that has made multiple trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Not to be outdone over 750 students at Luther participate in the school’s six choirs, three bands, three orchestras, two jazz bands, and numerous smaller ensembles, all of which combine to form one of the world’s largest, most acclaimed college music departments. Heather Miller was one of those students at Luther. Every Sunday at First Presbyterian Church her vocal and leadership talents are on display.

I noticed that a lot of notable alumni from Luther have landed in Minnesota. Decorah, Iowa is located just 15 miles from the Minnesota State line.

One 1988 graduate of Luther College is Callista Gingrich the wife of former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. Today she is the president of  Gingrich Productions and Author of the bestselling Ellis the Elephant Series.
