My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: Western State Colorado University
Location: Gunnison, CO
Western State Colorado University is referred to as Western. It has a distinction in the United States has being the college campus with the highest elevation. It’s campus sits at 7,700 above sea level.
With that elevation Gunnison and Western are going to see some snow. In fact they average about 45 inches a year. I was astonished to find out that on January 9-10, 2017 the university cancelled classes for the first time since 1970. That is place that knows how to battle and remove winter weather so students can get to class.
The picture below is from Western’s website.
Western’s elevation puts it close to major ski resorts, rock climbing and hiking. It also gave rise to the college’s High Altitude Performance Lab, or HAPLab.
WSCU football and track athletes compete at the Mountaineer Bowl, also ranks as one of the highest elevation collegiate football fields in the world.
