My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: Christopher Newport University
Location: Newport News, VA
I was on my Saturday morning 5K jaunt thru my neighborhood when a basketball coach that had passed away and I admired crossed my mind.
CJ Wollum had great success as the Men’s Basketball Coach at Christopher Newport University. Photo below depicts part of CNU campus.
C.J Wollum was an assistant at Marshall for 9 years until he left in 1984 to become the head coach at Christopher Newport in Virginia. CJ died in 2013 of brain cancer but he was the coach at CNU for 26 years winning 502 games and advancing to NCAA Division III tournament 17 times.
CJ had a brother that was a college coach for 25 years Charlie Wollum. Charlie coached at Bucknell (1975-1994) and William & Mary (1994-2000).
CNU is a public institution that was founded in 1960. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 5,051. The institution is named after Christopher Newport who was a pirate and captain of Susan Constant. One of the 3 ships that carried settlers to Jamestown, VA.
