My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.

The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and  turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.

In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.

I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: Wilmington University

Location: New Castle, DE

Delaware is not a big state. So its no surprise that the state supported University of Delaware (UD) is the largest campus in terms of enrollment.

What I found amazing is that a private college founded in 1968 Wilmington University is the second largest with an enrollment of 20,904 students. UD has an enrollment of over 23,000 students. Campus map of Wilmington University found below.

So how does a rather small campus footprint accommodate so many students?

Wilmington University generally serves commuter students and does not provide student housing facilities. They offer online courses, flexible course schedules and a multitude of campus locations.

Despite being a commuter and online university Wilmington does have a collegiate athletic program and competes on the NCAA Division II level. Their nickname is the Wildcats.

One interesting fact about Wilmington Athletics is their Head Men’s Basketball Coach is Dan Burke. Burke’s wife, Bethann, is the head coach of the women’s basketball program at CACC rival Goldey-Beacom.

Dan’s team is currently 19-8 and Bethann team is 16-11.
