My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.

The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and  turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.

In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.

I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: University of South Alabama

Location: Mobile AL

My next door neighbor has a great group of female friends and every year their group dubbed the Harmoniums go on an excursion or trip. They have been doing it for twenty years. This past weekend they went to Mobile and Fair Hope AL and took in all the lower part of Alabama has to offer even an air boat ride.

The Harmoniums shown below:

It got me wondering about the history of the University of South Alabama (USA) which is located in Mobile. USA’s story began in the early 1960s, when Mobile’s civic leaders saw the need to improve access to higher education in southwest Alabama. Realizing the region had outgrown the small extension program that operated out of a building downtown, they formulated plans for a four-year, degree-granting institution. On May 3, 1963, a bill creating a new, independent university successfully passed the Alabama Legislature, and USA was born.

Today the campus enrollment exceeds 16,000 students. Almost from the moment USA accepted its first students, its leaders began ambitiously working toward establishing a medical school. The College of Medicine charter class began in 1973 which makes USA an important part of the entire region.

In 2009 USA began competing in the sport of college football complete with a first class marching band with over 250 musicians.
