My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: California State University Long Beach
Location: Long Beach CA
For the first time ever I am participating in a fantasy baseball league. I have had to learn a lot since April but the big bonus is I have become familiar with who players are that play Major League Baseball.
As I have learned about players on each roster I was amazed to realize the number of players in Major League Baseball that came from CSU Long Beach.
I also learned that Long Beach has to have one of the most unique architecturally designed athletic arena with its Walter Pyramid. Top photo show Long Beach State campus with Walter Pyramid at top.
The home of Long Beach State basketball and volleyball for over 20 years, the Walter Pyramid has become a nationally recognized icon for the university and the city of Long Beach.
The school’s official mascot is the 49ers, in honor of the school’s founding in 1949 and the fact that the city of Long Beach, like many other cities in California, prospered due to the 1850 gold rush. In athletics, not only is “49er” used as the mascot of Long Beach State Athletics, they also use the term the “Beach.” The reason for the secondary nicknames is because, Long Beach State is the only Division I school in the country with a “Beach” in its name.
Since 1989, the baseball team has developed its nickname, the “Dirtbags,” thanks to their gritty play and determination. The Athletics Department prefers to be known as Long Beach State or LBSU.
In 2016 MLB rosters included the following players from Long Beach State-the most in the country from any one school. I need to get one of these guys on my fantasy league team.
Number of active MLB players from Long Beach State in 2016: 12
Players: Matt Duffy, Danny Espinosa, Marco Estrada, Jared Hughes, Evan Longoria, Cesar Ramos, Bryan Shaw, Troy Tulowitzki, Jered Weaver, Vance Worley, Jason Vargas, Nick Vincent
