My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.

The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.

In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.

I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: East Central University

Location: Ada OK

On Friday in my professional role at UNC Pembroke I got to spend a lot of time with the former Principal Chief of the Seminole Nation (2005-2009) Enoch Kelly Haney. The man is a fascinating leader, artist, and friend to many. His bio is below:

During the time we spent together touring the campus of UNC Pembroke we discussed a number of topics including colleges in Oklahoma and his friends. One friend he referenced was Bill Anoatubby the Governor of the Chickasaw Nation. Bill graduated from East Central University in Ada, OK.

East Central University was one of three normal schools established in eastern Oklahoma in 1909. Three similar institutions had been established earlier in the western half of the new state; each provided preparatory education including two years of college leading to teacher certification.

I found a lot of interesting facts about East Central University. Some of the ones that interested me are found below.

Five of ECU’s alumni were elected to the position of Governor.
Oklahoma Governor Robert S. Kerr
Oklahoma Governor George Nigh
Arizona Governor Ernest McFarland
Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby
Chickasaw Nation Lt. Governor Jefferson Keel

What ECU alum won over 30 PGA Tour events?
Dr. Gil Morgan has totaled more that $20 million in career earnings.

Great story about him below.

ECU is one of the few schools in the country that offers a bachelor of science degree in cartography.
ECU has one of the largest percentages of cartography graduates in the country.

For the uninformed like me cartography is the study or the discipline dealing with the conception, production, dissemination and study of maps.
