My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: Belmont University
Location: Nashville TN
In 2015 I wrote about a former coaching colleague and friend of mine Rick Byrd and his friendship with Vince Gill. Rick is the men’s basketball coach at Belmont University which is located in Nashville TN.
In 1889 Belmont founders Susan L. Heron and Ida B. Hood choose the former Belle Monte estate even in its dilapidated state as the grounds for what is now known as Belmont University. Part of Belle Monte included The Bell Tower, which today is Belmont’s famous cornerstone.
Photos below show the bell tower over time.
In 1890 Belmont College for Young Women opened to serve 90 students who paid the $60 in tuition.
As a former college basketball coach I never realized that in 1968 Belmont was one of the first colleges in the south to sponsonr college basketball. Pretty good story at link below:
Today Belmont is a vibrant university with nearly 8,000 students.
