My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Name of University: Eastern Washington University
Location: Cheney WA
In 1889 two events occurred in Washington; it earned statehood and the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy that opened its doors in 1882 became the State Normal School at Cheney. Today that institution is called Eastern Washington University (EWU).
In 1882 a generous contribution of $10,000 from Benjamin P. Cheney, a wealthy transportation industrialist from Boston MA, provided the citizens of Cheney WA with an institute for higher learning in their community. Cheney was on the director of the Northern Pacific Railroad and the town was named in his honor. Ironically the town was called Billings in honor of a previous president of the railroad.
Today Cheney has a population of around 10,000 people. Below is a aerial map of the town and if you look close you can see the red artificial playing surface at EWU in center of photo.
Photo of EWU Football Field is named after Michael Roos and is called Roos Field. It got it red turf in 2010.
Michael Roos, an Eastern Washington alumnus who is a retired All-Pro lineman for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, kicked the drive off with a $500,000 donation. ESPN broadcaster Colin Cowherd, also an EWU graduate, threw in $50,000.
